The woman accused of slapping a Hamilton rest home resident is being considered for police diversion.

Sonali Anantara Deo, 23, appeared in Hamilton District Court on Thursday charged with common assault.

She covered her face with a scarf during her appearance.

Deo was charged after the family of 86-year-old Cascades retirement home resident Piri Hemi placed a hidden camera in his room, which captured the alleged assault.

The court was told she would be considered for police diversion, where the charges can be withdrawn if she completes agreed conditions, and she surrendered her passport.

Deo was remanded on bail to October 12.
