Lower Hutt's Queensgate Shopping Centre, damaged in the Kaikoura earthquake in November, is about to be open fully again.

An extended weekend of celebrations has been promised after the balance of the shops welcome customers back on Thursday.

After the 7.8-magnitude quake, the Event Cinemas complex and part of the carpark were demolished, and the work meant 64 adjacent outlets remained shut.

Queensgate's management company, Stride Investment Management Ltd, says most of those stores will be operating again.

However, there will be a few exceptions because of the "usual tenant movements and upgrade".

Customer will notice some interim changes, including the building being "shrink wrapped" to protect it from the elements for refurbishment work.
