Rethink urged after high Sept road toll

The government is being urged to rethink its road safety strategy after the road toll hit a seven-year high for the month of September.

The toll of 25 was the highest since 2009 and the annual road toll now stands at 244 - 17 more than at the same stage last year, prompting Labour to seek changes from Simon Bridges.

"We are heading for the third consecutive year of an increasing road toll - this is now a trend going in the wrong direction after decades of slow but steady decline in road deaths

"The Minister of Transport needs to urgently review his 'Safer Journeys' strategy and insist on reversing the decline in road policing," said Labour transport spokeswoman Sue Moroney.

Despite an increase in road fatalities, the number of deadly crashes is 209 compared to 205 at the same stage a year earlier.
