Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo has snapped off his right rear wheel after clipping a barrier in Friday's opening practice for the European Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.

The Red Bull driver hit the barrier while exiting turn 15, bringing an end to the session.

Reports indicate Ricciardo ran wide at the turn, hitting the wall while trying to correct an oversteer.

The accident brought out the red flag with 22 minutes remaining and a crane was needed to get his car off the track.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest pace ahead of teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg.

Apart from Ricciardo, a number of other drivers ran off track on a bumpy, windy and dusty Baku street circuit.

Hamilton had a less serious brush with a wall but was still a third of a second ahead of Rosberg, with Valtteri Bottas third fastest, thriving on the 2.1km main straight as he took his Williams up to 351km/h.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso was an impressive fourth quickest, ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, 2.2 seconds off Hamilton's time.

Ricciardo was 13th fastest in the initial practice standings.
