Rio-bound Gaze eyes world junior title

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 1/07/2016

Rio Olympics-bound Sam Gaze has overcome illness and will head the New Zealand challenge at the mountain bike cross-country world championships in the Czech Republic.

Gaze will contest the under-23 category at the Nove Mesto Morave course, along with Wellington's Jack Compton and North Canterbury brothers Ben and Craig Oliver.

Coach Christoph Sauser says Gaze has recovered this week from the illness that hindered his preparations for the race on Saturday night (NZT).

The Cambridge 20-year-old, who rides for the Specialized Factory Racing team, has been in excellent form this season, with two wins and a third in under-23 World Cup events.

Reigning under-23 world champion and fellow New Zealander Anton Cooper won't get the chance to defend his title.

Cooper is still recovering from illness and is planning a return to the World Cup circuit in Canada in August.
