Rio hopefuls Hendry and Fox well placed

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/06/2016

The Olympic selection duel between Michael Hendry and Ryan Fox continues to bubble, with both New Zealand golfers well placed midway through tournaments in Japan and Scotland.

Hendry improved from 22nd to a share of fifth following the second round of the ISPS Handa Global Cup tournament in Ishikawa.

The in-form Aucklander carded a five-under 66 to be eight-under, two shots behind co-leaders Emiliano Grillo of Argentina and Sang Hyun Park of Korea.

Hendry's world ranking of 234 is just 13 places below Fox, who has struggled this year in Europe.

One of them is likely to be the second-ranked New Zealander on the Olympic cut-off date of July 11 and be eligible to join top-ranked Kiwi Danny Lee in Rio.

Fox is showing signs of a return to form at a second-tier Challenge Tour event, the Scottish Hydro Challenge in Aviemore.

He is third on 11-under, two strokes behind English leader Chris Selfridge after following his opening 65 with a five-under 66.

Meanwhile, world No.44 Lee is having rare week off on the US PGA Tour.

The lone Kiwi at the Quicken Loans National in Maryland is Tim Wilkinson, who missed the cut by two strokes after adding a second-round 74 to his opening one-under 70.
