Roads remain closed in Kaikoura

All roads into Kaikoura remain closed after the devastating earthquake in the early hours of Monday morning.

Canterbury Regional Civil Defence and Emergency Management Controller Baden Ewart said he's caught wind of people who think they can drive into Kaikoura or will be able to in the coming days.

"This is simply not the case. All roads in and out of Kaikoura are closed due to landslides, damaged bridges and infrastructure, road subsidence and the risk of continued falling debris."

Civil Defence do not know how long State Highway One will be closed.

"There is a huge amount of debris to be dealt with and a substantial amount of infrastructure damage," Mr Ewart said.

They are also dealing with unstable and dangerous conditions due to the weather and aftershocks.

"We will keep the public informed about road access but do want to reinforce the message that all road access into Kaikoura remains closed."

Mr Ewart urges the public to be patient.
