An armed man and his accomplice robbed a tavern in Tauranga overnight, police say.

Police are investigating the incident at Cheers Tavern in Bayfair, which occurred shortly after closing at about 1am on Tuesday.

They said two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, forced their way into the bar before threatening a staff member and making off with a sum of cash.

"It appears that the two males have run from the tavern, crossing State Highway 29A and heading in the direction of Truman Lane, beside Baypark Stadium," Tauranga CIB Detective Sergeant Craig Rawlinson said.

"The use of a firearm to threaten a lone staff member is extremely concerning and it was fortunate that nobody was badly hurt."

Police appealed for anyone who might have seen suspicious activity in the area to contact them.
