New Zealand athlete Zane Robertson has unleashed a withering run in Germany, smashing the Oceania record for a 10km road race.

Robertson won the Berlin Great 10k race in 27min 28sec, the fourth-quickest time by any runner this year and reportedly among the 20 fastest times in history. It is the fastest time recorded on German soil.

In fine conditions, Robertson smashed the previous Oceania record of 27:54, set by Australian Craig Mottram in Manchester 12 years ago.

Robertson pulled clear from the start and finished 50sec ahead of Avet Habte of Eritrea. Kenyan Nicholas Korir was third, a further 9sec back.

The performance comes two months after Robertson placed 12th in the 10,000m final at the Rio Olympics.

The 26-year-old's time of 27:33.67 lowered Dick Quax's 39-year-old New Zealand record by more than 8sec.
