Kiwi Olympic trap shooting medallist Natalie Rooney has lost in a shoot-out to finish runner-up at a World Cup meet in Mexico.

Rooney produced her best performance of 2017 before losing out to little-fancied American Ashley Carroll in the dramatic six-woman final in Acapulco.

The pair finished tied on 42 successful shots out of 50, with Rooney having opened the door to the American with a couple of late misses.

The Kiwi then missed her first shot in the shoot-out, with Carroll claiming victory, and her maiden World Cup win, courtesy of a successful shot.

It was nevertheless an improved performance from Rooney, who rose to prominence in 2016 via a silver medal at the Rio Olympics and victory at the subsequent ISSF World Cup final in Rome.

Ranked second in the world, she opened the year with a disappointing 21st placing at the World Cup event in New Delhi in February.

Italian-based Rooney was on song from the outset in Acapulco on Monday (NZT), placing third through the qualifying phase when she shot 71 from a possible 75.
