Rotorua tenor Frederick Jones has scored a hometown win by taking out the $20,000 Dame Malvina Major Foundation first prize at the annual New Zealand Aria competition.

Jones "rose to the top" of an outstanding field, one of the adjudicators, Australian tenor Glenn Winslade, said.

Fellow adjudicator and Sydney-based opera singer and director Luise Napier was also impressed by the calibre of the voices she heard.

"There must be something in the water for you to produce such an overabundance of talented young singers in New Zealand," she said.

Second place went to tenor Filipe Manu, while soprano Eliza Boom was third.
