English giants Tottenham Hotspur and Italian outfit Fiorentina have been ousted from the Europa League.

Socceroos goalkeeper Mathew Ryan put in a solid performance as Genk advanced to the last 16 of the Europa League on Friday.

Australia's No.1 gloveman kept a cleansheet for the Belgians as they beat Astra 1-0 to advance 3-2 on aggregate, to place them alongside the likes of Manchester United, Lyon, Ajax and Borrussia Moenchengladback in the next round.

Tottenham were eliminated by Gent while Moenchengladbach launched a stunning comeback to send Fiorentina packing.

Gent earned a 2-2 at Wembley to beat Spurs 3-2 on aggregate while Moenchengladbach upset the Italians 4-2 to win 4-3 on aggregate and reach the last 16.

Christian Eriksen sent Spurs into the lead when he reached Erik Dier's long ball and burst into the area before drilling past Lovre Kalinic.

However it looked like the hosts were determined to self-destruct when Harry Kane scored an own goal and Dele Alli was sent off for an ugly lunge on Brecht Dejaegere.

Wanyama put the hosts back on track but as they searched for the goal to send them through, Jeremy Perbet struck on the counter to eliminate them.

In Florence, Fiorentina raced into a three goal aggregate lead when Nikola Kalinic and Borja Valero sent them ahead against Moenchengladbach.

But Gladbach's Lars Stindl then scored a sensational 12-minute hat-trick to turn the tie on its head, before Andreas Christensen added a fourth.

Elsewhere Sparta Prague drew 1-1 with Rostov but were eliminated 5-1, Copenhagen drew 0-0 with Ludogorets to progress 2-1 while Lyon thrashed AZ Alkmaar 7-1 for a 11-2 aggregate win.
