Ryanair to step up battle with Lufthansa

Irish airline Ryanair has announced it will use Frankfurt, Germany's biggest airport, from March 2017.

Europe's biggest low-cost airline Ryanair is take on Lufthansa on its home turf by beginning to fly out of Frankfurt airport, the German national carrier's main hub.

Frankfurt airport operator Fraport and Ryanair announced on Wednesday that the Irish airline will use Germany's biggest airport to fly from March 2017 to holiday destinations such as Spain's Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga, as well as Faro in Portugal.

Ryanair is currently planning to operate two aircraft out of Frankfurt with four departures each day generating about 400,000 passengers a year

But the budget airline is already planning an expansion of the number of destinations it flies to and from Frankfurt by the end of the year.

"We hope that we will be able to offer a significantly bigger flight plan from winter," said Ryanair spokesman Kenny Jacobs.
