New Zealand allrounder Jesse Ryder has burst into life with a match-winning knock for Essex in the English Twenty20 championship.

Ryder blasted 42 off 28 balls in the seven-wicket win over Glamorgan in Cardiff to end a relatively lean run of form in county cricket.

The unwanted Black Cap has scored 208 runs in nine first class innings this season but had the confidence to open his shoulders when opening on Wednesday as Essex chased down 140-6.

Ryder struck three fours off the third over of the innings bowled by South African quick Dale Steyn before thumping Dutch international seamer Timm van der Gugten for 18 runs in the following over as they reached 143-3 with 22 balls to spare.
