NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 1/05/2017

Getting out of bed will be even more difficult as the country has had it's coldest night of the year, with parts of the South Island dropping below zero degrees.

The whole country suffered temperatures in the single digits overnight on Monday, with Auckland dropping to 6C, while Alexandra dropped to -2.7C, which would've felt like -5C, the MetService says.

Though the sun is expected to defrost the country during the day, the repriee will be short-lived as more chilly temperatures are expected later in the week.

A severe weather watch is in place for Canterbury, Otago, Dunedin and Southland as northwest gales are developing over the South Island.
