South Korean lawmakers have voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye, in a stunning fall for country's first female president.

South Korea's parliament has voted to impeach President Park Geun Hye, who has been dogged by accusations of corruption.

A total of 234 out of 300 lawmakers voted on Friday in favour of the move, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap, meeting the minimum two thirds requirement.

Park's impeachment comes after weeks of protests, which saw hundreds of thousands of South Koreans taking to the streets to demand her resignation.

The president is accused of helping her friend Choi Soon Sil to extort money from top South Korean companies and of allowing her to interfere in state affairs.
