Saints blitz Rangers in NBL decider

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 4/06/2016

Wellington Saints have secured a ninth New Zealand NBL title with a dominant 94-82 win over Auckland's Super City Rangers in Invercargill.

Leon Henry produced a game-high 26 points for the Saints, including 11 in the first quarter as they raced 27-13 ahead, having scored 18 of the first 20 points.

The Rangers closed the margin to five late in the second quarter but they couldn't fully bridge the gap, hampered by the absence of the league's leading scorer - Eric Devendorf - who injured an ankle during their semi-final win over Canterbury Rams the night before.

Saints were also able to restrict Tall Blacks guard Corey Webster to just 12 points, leaving Lindsay Tait to carry much of the Rangers' scoring with 20.

Any thoughts of a late Rangers revival was foiled when NZ Breakers captain Mika Vukona fouled out.

Henry received scoring support from Tai Wesley (19 points), Torrey Craig (15) and BJ Anthony (14).

The Saints cemented their status as the most successful club in the league's 35-year history. The next-best, with four titles each, are the Auckland Stars and Canterbury Rams.
