The Salvation Army is going to increase its emergency housing capacity with $1.5 million funding from the government.

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says the money will ensure it can provide 884 emergency housing places each year, and 84 of those will be new.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Lynette Hudson says it's good to see the government recognising the need for emergency accommodation and delivering resources.

It will extend its emergency housing in Napier, Wellington, Marlborough and Invercargill.
