Samsung calls for urgent end to Note 7 use

Samsung Note 7 © Getty Images Samsung Note 7 Korean electronics giant Samsung has urged consumers around the world to stop using Galaxy Note 7 smartphones immediately and exchange them as soon as possible, as more reports of the phones catching fire emerge.

The company made an unprecedented global recall of the phablet last month after it emerged there had been 35 confirmed cases of batteries catching fires during charging, only weeks after launch.

Since then, at least two more cases have been reported, including at hotel in Perth, prompting the company to call for an "immediate" end to all use by customers.

"We are asking users to power down their Galaxy Note 7s and exchange them as soon as possible,'' Samsung's mobile president Koh Dong-jin said in a statement.

No cases have been reported in New Zealand, but all phone providers are cooperating with Samsung's recall.

Both Vodafone, Spark and 2 Degrees have all stopped sales of the phone and are offering various options for trading in replacing the units at stores.

An investigation by Samsung found faulty rechargeable lithium batteries from one of its suppliers were the cause of the fires.

Airlines around the world, including Scandinavian Airlines and Singapore Airlines, have begun banning either use or charging of the phone on flights and the US Federal Aviation Administration looks set to follow after a warning by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
