Savea in the dark about NZ Rugby deal

NZN 13/07/2016 By Daniel Gilhooly

Brilliant flanker Ardie Savea has no idea why his extended New Zealand rugby contract ends one year short of the World Cup.

All he knows is there's plenty to accomplish in the next two seasons.

The 22-year-old openside re-signed with the Hurricanes and NZ Rugby until 2018, one year less than older brother Julian, who is among a handful of elite All Blacks committed to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Prodigiously talented Ardie Savea already shapes as a key part of that campaign but his latest deal winds up a year earlier.

Suggestions he did it to command a massive contract next time up drew a quizzical look from the two-Test forward at a press conference on Thursday.

"I just got advised by my agent, two years and then just see what happens after that. Nothing's guaranteed," he said.

"I've just got play well for the Hurricanes and see where that takes me.

"It's always good to know you're going to be somewhere were you love playing."

Savea, who burst onto the Test scene with two imperious outings off the bench against Wales in June, believes he has plenty to work on in his game.

His desire to win a Super Rugby title with the Hurricanes is greater than ever after they fell one step short in his third season last year.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd was unconcerned by the length of Savea's contract, expecting the player who "can be anything he really wants", to eventually commit for longer to his home city of Wellington.

"He's a special character who has a skill set which enables him to do a lot of things," Boyd said.

"I think seven's his best position. He has the ability to play at eight and if he really put his mind to it, he could play in the midfield as well."

Boyd says the Hurricanes are close to finalising their squad for next year, with a couple more players to nail down, including star first five-eighth Beauden Barrett.
