Scammers obtain nurses' email addresses

Scammers have fraudulently obtained tens-of-thousands of email addresses from the New Zealand Nurses Organisation.

The union said a person pretending to be its chief executive Memo Musa used a fake Yahoo account to request the email addresses of its members.

"Unfortunately this information was released," NZNO said in a statement.

"The amount of (email) addresses released is in the tens of thousands."

NZNO said while it has 47,000 members, not all had lodged email addresses with the organisation.

Acting chief executive Jane MacGeorge said it was working to mitigate the problem.

"We have met with the cyber departments of NZ Police, Ministry of Health and the Department of Internal Affairs," she said.

"We have communicated with the chief executives of district health boards ... to get communication out to the health sector about this release of email addresses and are advising them to be on alert."

The union described the cyber fraud as a phishing attack, which uses "emails that deceive recipients into believing that they are responding to a legitimate request, in this case from the chief executive".

"The Department of Internal Affairs has requested that Yahoo shut this fake email address down," NZNO said.
