School land to host relocatable houses

Vacant government-owned land in Auckland earmarked for a new school is going to be used for emergency housing with homes that can be easily moved to be built on the site.

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett announced the plan on Friday, saying the 1.6ha site in Otahuhu had been leased from the Ministry of Education because it wouldn't be needed for several years.

Work will start soon on 51 homes designed to be easily relocated.

They'll be used for families in urgent need before they move into permanent accommodation.

The houses are expected to stay in place for at least seven years, then they'll be moved to a permanent site somewhere else.

"This is excellent use of the Crown's land resources in Auckland to address the need for more emergency and temporary housing for vulnerable families," Ms Bennett said.
