Electrical problems have scuppered Scott Dixon's hopes of victory at the latest IndyCar series round in Detroit.

New Zealand driver Dixon was forced to pull out of the first race of the Duel in Detroit with 14 laps remaining out of 70.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was well placed before the transmission-related issues forced him into the pits and ultimately ended his chances.

Dixon was credited with 19th place, dropping him from second to third in the series standings behind runaway French leader Simon Pagenaud and another Team Penske driver, Brazilian Helio Castroneves.

The race was won by Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais.

Race two at the Belle Isle street circuit will be held on Sunday.
