New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has qualified sixth fastest for the second round of the IndyCar series in Arizona.

Dixon clocked 38.6519sec for his fastest two laps in final qualifying for the Phoenix Grand Prix, having been fourth-quickest in practice.

The series defending champion was left in the wake of Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who qualified on pole position for Saturday's race courtesy of a two-lap time of 38.2604 - a record for the one mile oval track.

Team Penske driver Castroneves is joined on the front row by Tony Kanaan of the United States.

Kanaan's Chip Ganassi Racing Team colleague Dixon was seventh in the opening round of the series in Florida last month.
