Scrap Major Events Fund: ACT

ACT wants the government to scrap the Major Events Fund which is used to help finance international sports events that are held in New Zealand.

Party leader David Seymour says ministers should focus on running the country.

"Core services like education, infrastructure and policing all suffer when politicians are distracted by the glamour of corporate showbiz," he said.

"Governments fall into the trap of granting fat cheques to organisations that are perfectly capable of raising a profit without help."

Mr Seymour says the government "narrowly escaped being sucker-punched" by Duco Events, the promoters of the Joseph Parker's WBO world title fight.

Duco Events applied for help to stage the boxing match in Auckland and then withdrew its application.

It's reported the fight will go ahead in Auckland without help from the government.

"This raises the question - how many events has the government funded that could have gone ahead without corporate welfare?" Mr Seymour said.
