Seal pups begin Qld shark-attack recovery

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/06/2016

Two New Zealand fur seals that were attacked by sharks off the Queensland coast are being cared for at the Gold Coast's Sea World theme park after being rescued from the beach.

The seals, found at Mermaid Beach and North Stradbroke Island at the weekend, suffered "cookie-cutter shark wounds" and are on antibiotics, fluids and a nutritional programme under the watchful eyes of vets.

"It is not uncommon for these younger seals to be found this far north at this time of year as they have just been weaned from their mothers and their inexperience, coupled with extreme weather conditions, can result in getting caught in currents and floating north," Sea World director of marine sciences Trevor Long said.
