A search is under way for a 28-year-old man missing in Paparoa National Park on the West Coast.

The man did not return from a walk up Mt Bovis and police were notified at about 8.45pm on Saturday.

After checking in local townships police believe the man is still up the mountain and say he was not prepared for a night outdoors.

Crews on the ground and a helicopter are being used in the search.

It's a day trip up Mt Bovis, a 1252m peak east of Punakaiki in the Paparoa Range behind Bullock Creek Farm, according to information websites for trampers.
