The search for a man whose boat was found upturned off the Tauranga coast almost a week ago has been suspended.

Karl Earwaker, a 39-year-old Te Awamutu farmer, was the sole occupant of the 5.6-metre fibreglass Sea Nymph, named Optimist.

The pilot of a light aircraft spotted the boat floating upside down 2.5 nautical miles south of Mayor Island last Tuesday.

The discovery sparked a search by police, the coastguard, and family and friends.

Senior Sergeant Mark Pakes says that despite extensive efforts above and below the ocean surface, there were no leads as to where Mr Earwaker might be.

"Our thoughts are very much with Karl's family and friends as they have to come to grips with the loss of a loved one," he said.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.
