Search for missing toddler on hold

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 12/06/2016

The search for a missing toddler in a flooded West Coast river has been put on hold.

Two-year-old Emily Saunders, her parents Sandra and Michael and another man, Barry Petrie, were crossing the swollen Poerua River, near Harihari, in a 4WD when it became submerged last Thursday.

The couple made it to safety but Emily and Mr Petrie were swept away.

Mr Petrie's body has since been found but the search continues for the toddler who is presumed dead.

Police confirmed on Monday evening the search would not take place on Tuesday, but would resume once conditions around the Poerua River improved so the police dive squad could enter the water.

Mr Petrie, 66, will be farewelled at a service in Greymouth on Friday.
