Search and rescue teams are looking in a forest at Muriwai for missing Auckland woman Carissa Avison, who hasn't been seen since Thursday.

The 21-year-old was last seen leaving her home on Dockside Lane, Auckland Central, at about 8.30am on Thursday, police said on Saturday.

They have established she was on Holder Place on the North Shore about 10am on Thursday and then received a ride to Muriwai on Auckland's west coast, arriving about 11am, but her destination from there isn't known.

The police search now involves search-and-rescue teams looking in an area of forest near the corner of Coast and Grass Track Roads in Muriwai.

Police say they have no reason to suspect foul play but they are concerned for Ms Avison's safety.

Her family and friends became concerned when she failed to show up for work, which is out of character for her.

Police have spoken to friends, family and workmates and continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

She was wearing black Nike sports shoes with white soles, black leggings and a white t-shirt and was carrying a dark blue Country Road canvas duffle bag.
