The search for a person who police believe might have been on a boat that was found upturned off the Tauranga coast has been suspended for the day.

The 5.6m fibreglass Sea Nymph pleasure boat, named Optimist, was seen floating upside down two nautical miles south of Mayor Island on Tuesday.

The discovery was made by a spotter plane pilot working for a commercial fishing company and the craft was recovered later in the day.

Police say their inquiries have established there had potentially been one person on board.

A sea and air search resumed on Wednesday, involving police, the coastguard and private vessels and aircraft.

It will continue on Thursday.

Police say they are working closely with the family of the person who might have been on the boat and are offering support.
