Fears for the safety of a camper missing in Golden Bay since going for a walk by a river are growing as search teams continue to scour the area.

James "Hemi" Rano Dick was last seen waist-deep in water near the crusher plant below the rapids in the Takaka River on Wednesday afternoon.

Since he was reported missing by friends on Thursday, Land Search and Rescue teams have scoured the river's banks and sent out kayaks.

On Saturday they will resume searching the area where he was last seen.

Nelson Police have also issued an appeal of sightings and are asking to hear from anyone who may have talked to Mr Dick on social media since Wednesday.

He has been described as 180cm tall, with long dreadlocks and large distinctive tattoos. He was only wearing khaki cargo pants when he was last seen.
