A search for a person missing after an inflatable boat capsized in Otaki River, claiming the life of a man, will resume on Tuesday.

The body of a middle-aged man was recovered on Monday after the boat carrying the pair overturned at around 1.40pm.

Police say he was believed to be a local man.

A shoreline search failed to find any sign of the missing person on Monday after a waterborne search had to be suspended because of rough conditions off the Kapiti Coast.

A full-scale search, including surf lifesaving boats, 4WDs and volunteers, is expect to get under way at 9am after high tide.
