Second Zimbabwe seamer ruled out of Tests

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/07/2016

Injured pace bowler Tendai Chatara has been ruled out of the Test series against New Zealand, leaving Zimbabwe with an inexperienced attack for both games in Bulawayo.

Right-armer Chatara suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury during Zimbabwe A's 259-run loss to the Black Caps in Harare.

The 25-year-old has been replaced in the squad by Michael Chinouya, 30, who has played in two one-day internationals but is uncapped at Test level.

Chatara, who has taken 20 wickets in seven Tests, is the second seamer ruled out of the series after Tinashe Panyangara failed to recover from a back niggle.

It leaves Zimbabwe with a seam attack comprising two uncapped Test players - Chinouya and Tauri Muzarabani - while likely new ball pair Njabulo Ncube and Donald Tiripano have played one Test each.

Opening batsman Tino Mawoyo is also in doubt, having been struck on the hand in the Zimbabwe A match. A X-ray showed no fracture but he will continue to be monitored by medical staff.

The first Test starts at the Queens Sports Club on Friday.
