Serena Williams sells out ASB Classic

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 4/10/2016

The drawcard of tennis sensation Serena Williams has led to a sellout of tickets to the ASB Classic women's weekend sessions in Auckland next year.

Tickets for the final days of women's matches in the January 2-7 tournament next year have sold out in less than a week.

It's the first time in the event's 61 year history that the women have sold out before the men.

"We have achieved a record for the most tickets sold in one day last Thursday and that momentum has continued over the weekend," ASB Classic tournament director Karl Budge said.

This year 64,000 people attended the summer tournament, but with demand at an all-time high Mr Budge expects next year's numbers to be even higher.

"We are in the process of signing some very strong players so we're very excited about the level of competition that we'll have on-court," he said.

Williams, who has won 22 Grand Slam singles titles and 71 WTA titles in her career, will make her debut at the tournament which was won by her sister Venus in 2015.

"The ASB Classic is the first event of the year. It can really set you up for a great run in Melbourne and I will be looking to start my year strongly in Auckland," she said.

The tournament runs from January 2-7 and more big names are expected to be announced in the coming months.
