Seven people have been charged after a series of raids in the west Auckland suburb of Avondale uncovered an alleged synthetic cannabis operation, police say.

Five homes were searched on Bellgrove Place, Sceptre Street and Victor Street just before 6:30am on Monday.

The seven men and woman, aged between 40 and 18, are facing a range of charges including possession of synthetic cannabis for supply, possession of cannabis and methamphetamine, as well as utensils, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

"[This] is the result of a long-running investigation into the sale and distribution of synthetic cannabis," Inspector Jacqui Whittaker said.

"This is an area with lots of young families and children, we are committed to ensuring that everyone in this area is safe and feels safe, and that the kids living here have a happy and positive neighbourhood."
