Central New Zealand has been shaken by another strong quake this afternoon, with a magnitude-5.1 earthquake hitting near Seddon.

The earthquake was centred 15km south-east of Seddon, according to GeoNet, who rated the intensity as 'severe'.

It struck at 1.19pm, at a depth of 11km, and was widely felt.

The region was also hit by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake last week, and a magnitude 5.5 the week before. It has been dealing with hundreds of aftershocks in the wake of the 7.8 magnitude quake that struck in November.

Emergency services in Wellington and Christchurch said they had not heard any reports of damage in the immediate aftermath of the quake.

Within five minutes more than 3000 people reported feeling the quake, from Gisborne to Seddon.
