Sevilla in La Liga stalemate with Sporting

Sevilla have been held to a goalless home draw by relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon in the Spanish La Liga on Sunday.

Jorge Sampaoli's side dominated possession and had 17 attempts on goal but lacked a cutting edge, particularly in the second half when they launched repeated assaults on the visiting goal but could not get past the impressive Ivan Cuellar.

The Sporting goalkeeper made a stunning save to deny Vitolo by leaping low to the right bottom corner to tip away a shot.

Sevilla were not helped by their wayward shooting at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Vitolo, Vicente Iborra, Steven Nzonzi and Steven Jovetic all missed the target with efforts in the closing stages.

Sevilla are fourth spot on 58 points, level with Atletico Madrid, who leapfrogged them on goal difference after beating Malaga 2-0 earlier this weekend.

Koke capitalised on some excellent hold-up play from Fernando Torres to nudge Atletico ahead in the 26th minute of a scrappy game.

Filipe Luis then pounced on a loose ball in the 74th minute after another run from Torres to dink his finish over Carlos Kameni for his first goal of the season.

Sevilla have surrendered a nine-point lead over Atletico in the space of four games, and dropped out of the top three for the first time since November.

Sporting remain in 18th, five points adrift of safety.

Real Madrid, who have 65 points, entertain Alaves on Sunday (Monday AEST), while champions Barcelona, two points behind the leaders, visit Granada.

In other La Liga results so far this round, Real Sociedad's hopes of finishing fourth faded further after they drew 1-1 at home with Leganes.

Eusebio Sacristan's side are fifth in the standings on 49 points.

Athletic Bilbao, in seventh, beat basement club Osasuna 2-1 to move to within one point of sixth place Villarreal after Fran Escriba's side were beaten 3-2 at home to Eibar, who are eighth, three points behind Athletic.

Espanyol are ninth in the standings, one point back from Eibar, after leaving it late to beat Real Betis 2-1.
