Sevilla have beaten Alaves 2-1 to go level on points with Real Madrid in La Liga.

Sevilla joined Spanish leaders Real Madrid on 14 points courtesy of a brace from Wissam Ben Yedder in the 2-1 home defeat of Alaves.

A tight game in Seville burst into life in the final 17 minutes.

Ben Yedder gave the hosts the lead after an astonishing backheel pass from Ganso, only for defender Victor Laguardia to quickly level for spirited Alaves.

Yedder restored Sevilla's lead a minute from the end by cleverly flicking home the centre of Spain winger Vitolo.

"It was wonderful to win like this," said Sevilla's Ganso, who joined arrived in July from Sao Paulo.

"I am adapting to the team little by little, and I think this was my best match so far. ... It's great for us to be so high up in the table."

Alaves coach Mauricio Pellegrino said: "I think a draw would have been a fairer result today, but in football what matters is scoring goals - and not conceding them."

The late win left Sevilla level on points with Real - who will host modest Eibar on Sunday - but with an inferior goal difference to Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

Alaves are now 11th with nine points.

Later, stylish Las Palmas came from 2-0 down to battle out a deserved 2-2 draw at Osasuna.

The draw left Las Palmas in seventh place and Osasuna second bottom.

Meanwhile, his Osasuna counterpart, Enrique Martin, was taken to hospital after the tense draw with chest pains.

The condition of Martin, 60, was afterwards said to be "not very serious" by the hospital, and it was expected that he would be allowed home after undergoing routine tests.

Saturday's late game was a last-gasp 2-1 home win for Deportivo La Coruna against Sporting Gijon, thanks to an injury-time winner for the hosts from Ryan Babel.

The win lifted Deportivo up to 12th and pulled Gijon down to 15th.

Earlier on Saturday, Leganes moved up to 10th with a 1-0 win at bottom team Granada, who are without a coach following the sacking this week of Paco Jemez.
