Sex offender faces indefinite jail term

A serial sex offender will spend an indefinite term behind bars after being sentenced to preventative detention for forcing a teenage inmate into oral sex.

Stephen Mark Gotty, 57, forcefully held his 19-year-old cellmate's head and made him perform oral sex on him in Mt Eden Corrections Facility in January last year.

He was convicted of two charges of sexual violation.

At the High Court at Auckland on Thursday, Justice Matthew Downs sentenced Gotty to preventative detention with a minimum nine year jail term.

He said an indefinite prison term was needed because Gotty had a high risk of reoffending and showed little if any inclination to reform his behaviour.

Gotty has 143 prior convictions dating back to when he was 17 and received 23 sentences of imprisonment.

This included raping a 17-year-old girl in 1996 when he entered her room after she had fallen asleep, and assaulting a teen transgender male in 2015.

In the latest assault, Gotty befriended the young Mt Eden inmate, who had limited experience of prison life, and urged him to share his cell.

However, once the prison entered lockdown that evening, Gotty began talking to the victim about "real twisted and sexual stuff", Justice Downs said.

Gotty then moved his top bunk mattress down beside his young inmate's bed and began touching him.

The teenager was frightened because Gotty had earlier told him that he beats people up, Justice Downs said.

"You performed oral sex on the victim. You then made him do the same to you," Justice Downs said.

"You forcefully held his head throughout. And, you told him he was now your 'bitch'."

The victim now suffered anxiety and "felt dirty" after the assault, Justice Downs said.

He took a shower immediately afterwards and was too afraid to use the emergency button in the cell, fearing there could be a long delay before help arrived.

Instead, he faked stomach pain so that Gotty called for help.

However, once out of the cell, the victim told prison staff he had been the victim of a sexual assault.
