As a student he was named America's Sexiest Man, now former US Senator Scott Brown looks set to be named the next ambassador to New Zealand.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to nominate the former Massachusetts representative for the role.

The White House announced the plan on Thursday (US time) but Mr Brown will need to be confirmed by the Senate before getting on a plane.

He would replace former Major League baseballer Mark Gilbert, who served as ambassador from 2015 until January, when former president Barack Obama left office.

Mr Brown was a lawyer serving in the Judge Advocate Generals Corp before serving as a senator from 2010 to 2013, when he lost his seat to Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

She tweeted her support for him as the next New Zealand ambassador after the announcement.

In 1982, as a 22-year-old law student Mr Brown won a Cosmopolitan magazine America's Sexiest Man competition, stripping down for a centrefold photo shoot.

He is currently a contributor for the Fox News Channel.

Mr Brown has in the past revealed an interest in coming to New Zealand to cycle.
