Sharks finalise ASADA deal

NZN 13/10/2016 Steve Zemek

The final five Cronulla players to be punished as part of the club's 2011 supplements scandal have all received 12-month backdated bans.

The NRL said former players Paul Aiton, Colin Best, Stuart Flanagan, Ben Pomeroy and John Williams had received 12-month bans, all of which had been backdated and had expired.

The five were not a part of the Sharks' group who accepted reduced ASADA bans in 2014 which amounted to three games.

They refused the "doped and duped" deal which included a token suspension in exchange for a guilty plea.

Sharks skipper Paul Gallen and Wade Graham were among 10 players to accept the deal in 2014 with the club this year recovering to win its maiden premiership.

The forgotten five's deal draws to a close one of the ugliest sagas in the history of rugby league.

Aiton recently signed a three-year contract extension with French-based Super League club Catalans while Pomeroy this year played with semi-professional club Lezignan Sangliers in France.

Best and Williams have both retired while Flanagan plays recreational park football.
