Sheep blamed for gastro outbreak

An inquiry into the contamination of Havelock North's water supply has been told sheep faeces was probably the cause of it.

The government-ordered inquiry into August's campylobacter outbreak which left more than 5000 sick was told bores that provided the water supply to the Hawke's Bay town had become contaminated and sheep in nearby paddocks were likely to be the source.

Hastings District Council water services manager Brett Chapman told the inquiry in Hastings, that sheep faeces from paddocks around the bores were the predominant source of contamination.
