The man who allegedly fatally shot a man in the driveway of a Manurewa home apologised to the people at the house as he left.

Police want to speak to 23-year-old Bodi McKee and say he has a firearm and should not be approached.

He was involved in a fight with a man he knew at a house on Winsford Street at about 7am on Saturday.

He presented a firearm and shot the man.

"Shortly after the incident McKee apologised to the occupants of the address and then left," said Detective Inspector Gary Lendrum.

The 32-year-old victim collapsed in the driveway and, despite help from paramedics, was pronounced dead at the scene about an hour later.

McKee is Maori, 183cm tall, of medium build and has tattoos on his left shoulder and left forearm.

Police are treating the investigation as a homicide.

The victim died of gunshot wounds, and a post mortem examination will be held on Sunday.

The argument between the two men was brief and police don't know what it was about.

The victim was staying at the house and had arrived the night before.

Family members were seen gathering near the house, believed to be the home of the dead man's mother, before a hearse arrived about 11am, Fairfax reported.
