Wednesday, June 21, 2017 will be the day with the least amount of available sunlight.

Overnight on Tuesday, there will be over 14.5 hours of darkness in Auckland and 15.5 hours at the end of the country in Dunedin.

The deep south only gets around eight and a half hours of sunlight on a good day currently, while Northland gets around nine and three quarters.

Central New Zealand gets around nine hours of sunlight.

The country will experience five hours less sunlight than a typical summer's day.

However, while Wednesday is the shortest day of the year, most New Zealanders will not start to notice it until later in July or even early August.
