Health authorities met an Air New Zealand international flight arriving in Auckland when people on board became sick.

Flight NZ281 from Singapore landed at Auckland Airport at 10.25pm on Friday, and remained on the tarmac for an hour and half as sick people on board were assessed.

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said there was nothing to suggest food poisoning was the cause and the airline was working with regional health authorities.

Two passengers confirmed to medical staff they were unwell prior to boarding the flight in Singapore. One was taken to Middlemore Hospital as a precautionary measure, she said.

Doctors in masks and white gowns boarded the plane when it was grounded in Auckland, Fairfax reports, citing a woman who was on the flight.

The airline is apologising for any inconvenience caused to other customers who were delayed disembarking the aircraft.

People waiting for them had no information about what was happening, media report.

Five passengers and one crew member became ill.
