A woman missing following a car crash at the top of the South Island was seen walking along the highway, police say.

They hold fears for the safety of 46-year-old Rachel Stokes of Wakefield after her car was found crashed on State Highway 6 near the Kawatiri Junction on Friday morning.

Ground crews and aircraft were being used in the search for her, and the nearby Buller River is also being searched.

Police urgently want a woman called Cheryl to get back in touch after she rang to say she had seen Ms Stokes on the road between Kawatiri and Murchison.

"Police hold serious concerns for her welfare and believe the information Cheryl may be able to provide could assist in locating her," said Sergeant Mal York.

Motorists were also being asked to watch out for Ms Stokes.

She was described as European but police don't know what she was wearing at the time.
