Silver Ferns Maia Wilson and Kelly Jury will spearhead a 12-strong New Zealand under-21 team to defend their netball World Youth Cup title in Botswana in July.

Coach Kiri Wills said the tough selection process had been centred around players who had shone in the current national netball premiership.

"The players have shown that they can stand up and that they can be tough - and we're going to need tough," Wills said.

"We've picked a team that gives us a lot of variety, particularly at either end of the court.

"We've got holding shooters, moving shooters, we've got defenders who can play space and play tight man, and so we can mix it up."

Northern Mystics defender Michaela Sokolich-Beatson will captain the side, with Tactix midcourter Charlotte Elley named vice-captain.

New Zealand has won gold at the four-yearly World Youth Cup three times - in 1992, 2005 and 2013, when they beat arch rivals Australia 52-47.

The team leaves New Zealand on July 3 for a training camp in Johannesburg before travelling to Gaborone where they begin their title defence with pool matches against Northern Ireland, Samoa, Scotland and Sri Lanka.
