Silver Fern Farms eyes venison move

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/05/2016

Meat processor Silver Fern Farms is looking to move its Christchurch venison plant to South Canterbury.

The lease at its site in Islington is due to expire and plans are afoot to demolish the plant buildings to make way for new commercial developments.

It wants to transfer its venison processing to a new integrated site at Pareora and is consulting with staff over the proposal.

"We plan to close the site and are consulting with the 54 Islington staff and their union to discuss the proposal and transfer options within the company," chief executive Dean Hamilton said.

It plans to spend $5 million to install a venison processing operation at its lamb and beef processing plant at Pareora, south of Timaru.
