Singapore's competition watchdog has cleared a proposed joint venture by Singapore Airlines and Germany's Lufthansa.

Singapore's competition watchdog has cleared a proposed joint venture by Singapore Airlines and Germany's Lufthansa.

The Competition Commission of Singapore said in a statement it had accepted the voluntary commitments made by both parties. Commitments include increasing seat capacity on flights between Singapore and Frankfurt as well as Singapore and the Swiss city of Zurich.

"The commitments ... would lead to increased passenger numbers and tourists to Singapore, and accordingly benefit Singapore's economy," the commission said.

A decision on the proposal was sought from the competition watchdog in February this year. Under the proposed joint venture, the two airlines will cooperate in terms of pricing, inventory management, sales and marketing.

Both parties will also co-ordinate schedules and capacity and share revenue on non-stop and direct services between Singapore and cities like Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf and Zurich.
